Magnet’s Health Benefits: Are They Real?March 10, 2017 / byArs Lexis / Categories : First Take
There are accounts of the health benefits of magnets that go back centuries. Some people believe they can treat a variety of diseases, including serious conditions like HIV and cancer. This is the reason magnetic therapy is an estimated billion dollar industry. The United States Food and Drug Administration, however, deems it illegal to market magnets as a treatment method.
Manufacturing companies also sell custom magnets wholesale for bigger profit, but there’s no real way of knowing what people who buy magnets in bulk would do with them. In case you’re wondering, static magnets can be used to create magnetic bracelets that supposedly have health benefits. Here are common myths about the use of magnets in treatments.
Magnetic Therapy Alleviates Joint Pain and Muscle Stiffness
One extensive study on static magnets in 2007 failed to show that it treats muscle and joint pains. Although there were other studies that show encouraging results, scientists and researchers failed to replicate them and, therefore, reached no conclusion.
Magnetic Bracelets Reduce Inflammation and Remove Toxins in the Body
There is a lack of scientific evidence to prove this. Those who conducted the research on the effectiveness of magnetic bracelets noted that those positive results could be attributed to placebo effects. Magnetic therapy, however, is proven to cause no harm.
Magnets Treat Depression
A clinical treatment called transcranial magnetic stimulation diagnoses and treats depression by exciting the brain. The method, however, uses electrical field and not magnetism. Static magnets have not been proven to influence any disease or work for health-related purposes.
There’s no doubt that the use of magnets has improved different aspects of people’s lives. Technology, manufacturing, construction, and even aeronautics won’t be what they are now if not for magnets. They are, however, not for improving health. The time will come when it probably will.
